How to read the chart

A Four Pillars chart has four columns: the year, month, day and hour of your birth, each made of a heavenly stem (top) and an earthly branch (bottom). In this table the day pillar is on the left, because its stem, the Day Master, stands for you. The Ten Gods show how every other stem relates to your Day Master, and the twelve stages show how strong your Day Master is in each branch.

The year changes at Risshun (around 4 February) and each month at its solar term, not on the first of the month. Learn more in what Four Pillars is, the Ten Gods and the twelve stages.

FAQ

Do I need my birth time?

No. Without a time you will see the year, month and day pillars, which carry most of the reading. Add the time to see the hour pillar too.

Why is my year animal different from the one I expected?

Eastern astrology starts the year at Risshun, around 4 February. If you were born in January or early February, your year pillar belongs to the previous year.
