Upright meaning
Stand firm and keep the advantage you’ve won.
A man stands on high ground fending off six wands thrust up at him from below. He’s outnumbered but has the better position. The Seven of Wands is about standing up for yourself: defending your beliefs, your work or your place against competition or criticism. Upright, you can hold your ground. Be confident and keep going.
Reversed meaning
You’re losing confidence under pressure. Narrow down what you need to protect.
Reversed, the pressure gets to you. You may feel overwhelmed, give in too easily or tire of always defending yourself. Decide what truly matters and protect that, rather than trying to hold everything at once.

A common misreading
The Seven of Wands doesn’t mean you’re losing; you hold the higher ground. It is about courage under pressure.
The story of this card
Seven tests the victory of the Six. Having won, you must now defend what you have won.
The Waite deck’s picture and symbols
In the Waite deck a man on a hilltop wields a wand against six others rising from below. He wears mismatched shoes, as if he rushed into battle.
History and differences between traditions
The Golden Dawn title is Lord of Valour. The mismatched shoes in the Waite deck are a detail many readers notice and interpret as hasty readiness.
